Independent Service Learning

Hello My name is Lamin Conteh, I have been at Constitution High for two years now. My values are caring, sharing, honesty, responsible, and respect. This may sound very corny, but this five concrete values as I call them are what make me the man I am today. These are my values. For this year service learning I was put in the community giving group, baysicaly, we conducted a research on line and find out what the children needs. After that we meet on Friday and disccuss what we find out during research. From their we helped raise money to buy toys and books for the children at CHOP.

For my 15 independence service hours, I volunteer at the Philadelphia book festival for about 7 hours. I was in charges of the costume, I pass out the event programs, and I was also in charge of making sure that people don't go back stage. I also volunteered at Squash Smart for a week after school, I help tutor 6th grader do there homework, and also play the game of squash. Squash Smart is a none profit organization in West Philadelphia and North Philadelphia that help kids all over Philly become successful in life. I had great time volunteer there, I learned a lot from does kids they behave really well too.

Service learning has helped me get more involved and helping my community more. I also learned a lot about myself. I learned that I can't work well with computer research.

Of Mice and Men= Motif

The motif Of Mice and Men was loneliness and companionship. Unlike Lennie and George they take care of each other and travel together. But crook, Candy, and Curley wife often face loneliness.

Crook’s was the only black migrant worker on the farm among several white migrant workers. He worked mostly by himself, and had a room by himself. He spent most of his free time in his bunkroom reading while some the guys goes out in town and drink. At on point of the story Crook had a little companionship when Lennie walks in his room and started to talk to him.

Candy’s on the other hand was lonely; he didn’t have any family or a place to live on his own. He seeks most of his companionship with his old dog, and some of the workers on the farm. He became more lonely and friendless when they shot his dog.

Unlike Candy and Crook, Curley’s wife was alone in her own home. She never did anything with her husband; he never showed her any kind of affection. The only thing that they did together was that he worked out and she watched. He always wanted her to stay in the house and do nothing. He never wanted her to talk to any other guy but him. But all she wanted to is to find someone that she could talk to about her dream and problem.

In Of Mice and Men their were a lot of motif that stand out to me, but the one that out to me the most was loneliness and companionship.  Even though these character were lonely at some point of the story they manage to find some kind of companionship. I hope this essay inspire you to write more often about motif after finishing reading a novel.

Service Learning=Plan

For may 28 service learning meeting we are presenting our research for our group. Our research is based on three things that we can get for the patient at CHOP. I find out that most of the patients at CHOP wants books, and toys. we would also discus how much money we raise so far, and how much money we need.

For next year service learning I think each student should be allowed to conduct an individual research on their project.

Theme= (Grade this one) American dream

Have you ever thought about your American Dream yet? Well if you haven’t thought about it yet, this is a good time for you to get a better understanding of a perfect American dream. What exactly is the American dream? The American dream is fame, family, and owning a nice dwelling.

George and Lennie often think their American dream is to own their own farm where they would live as a family. They would work together to grow their crops, and raise their little animal together; also they would look out for each other.

Curley’s wife also had her own American dream. Her American dream was that one day a man from Hollywood would marry her and take her to Hollywood with him. There she would become a showgirl or a movie star.
But unfortunately, her American dream was crushed, after she married curly.

Having a nice place to live in is also what most Americans dream of. Lennie and George often think about getting a house together. They dream about a place where they would have a fireplace and windmill. They would also like a place where they wouldn’t have to wake up to work when the weather is rough.

I, too, think of my American dream as one day having a family and a place to live, being famous, “an live of the fatta the LAN.” I plan to go to college and graduate school and work in the business world. While these are the things I dream about, and everyone has his or her own dreams. What are yours?

Symbols= "Of Mice and Men"

There are many symbols in “Of Mice and Men”. The symbol that I chose is Lennie’s puppy. I think Lennie’s puppy represents new beginning’s, hope, and dreams.

Lennie’s puppy symbolizes a new start for both Lennie and George. When Lennie received the puppy from Slim, he and George had big plans for raising the puppy together. The puppy would also keep him from getting in trouble. Lennie had a problem of petting a girl’s hair. If he pet the he would have this problem.

Lennie’s puppy symbolizes hope as well. After all, hope is what keeps Lennie and George together. Unlike most of the migrants workers, George and Lennie hope that one day after working in three different towns, they would raise enough money to buy a land where they would lived as a family, own their own little garden with a couple of animals, and a nice small electric stove for the winter. Having the puppy gives them hope that they would achieve this dream.

Lennie’s puppy also symbolizes dreams, especially the dream to live longer and experience the sorrow and the meaning of the world. When the puppy dies, Lennie’s dream dies as well.

Indeed I think Lennie puppy represent hope, new adventure, and dream. I also think he represent joy and life after death. This is just one of the symbol that really grab my attention after reading “Of Mice and Men” I hope this essay inspired to keep writing about one of your favorite character or a symbol in any book that read.

Service Learning=Reflection

my service learning group was outstanding yesterday during our meeting. I really liked that we were all participating and putting our best effort to do research and putting things together that were need for our project, for example making poster board and pamphelt. And i also liked that Miss Madhi had each individuals doing different thing at once, instead everyone doing one thing at the same time.

Bloom's Taxonomy-Synthesis

In your opinion, how many ways can you describe Mr. Dalton? And why?

In my opinion I thing Mr. Dalton is a very wealthy powerful man, and also a family man. But yet, I also thing his big hypocrite and a big fake.

Mr. Dalton is a very powerful wealthy man, who leaves in a nice neigborhood in a big house, with his lovable family. A man who is also respected for his kind heart, and his big donation to the community and also to the NAACP. His also a well-known man in the city of Chicago.

But yet, I also thing that his a hypocrite and a big fake. He leaves in a big house in very nice quiet neighborhood, but he never tried to sale or bought a house for a black person in that neighborhood. His also a man with higher power, and well respected, but he doesn’t use that power or his wealth to help solve the bigger issued around him.

To sum thing up, I thing Mr. Dalton his a very respected wealthy man who trying to get his name out of the public, But his not aware of the bigger issued around him, and his community.

News paper article* English

All Negros are Suspects
by Lamin Conteh

Last week here in Chicago four Negro boys were taken into custody, for the rap and murder of a young white female named Nicole Nokia. Police said that Nicole was on her way to her house, with five dollar in her purse, and two bottle of whisky, when all of the sudden two Negro boys attack her. One of the Negro boy snatch her purse and ran away, and the other Negro boy smacked her, took her upstairs in her room, raped her, and then murder her.

But a witness at the scene said Nicole Nokia was with her boy friend and some of her friend that night getting drunk, and playing the “devil’s music.” The witness also told reporter that she had never seen a niggar boy in that side of the town for a decade. She said the whole neighborhood is white. The dogs are white, cops, and even the house and tree are white. But yet, police still believe that she was raped and murder by Negros, they can see the black fingerprint all over her body.

Some think that police got the idea from a year ago, when a young white girl, by the name of Mary Dalton, was murdered and raped and her bones were found in the furnace in her own house. After being raped and killed by a Negro boy named Bigger Thomas. He then blamed it on a Red boy by the named of Jan. Since then, police have been hunting Negroes and charging them for all the rapes and murders in Chicago. And also a lot of white employee are firing their Negro employees, afraid of being killed or worse, raped.

Now, good people of Chicago the question is: Are all Negros suspected of raped and murder? Does this mean all Negros have to suffer for what Bigger Thomas did? When wills this holocaust of all-Negro as suspects going to end?

Bloom's Taxonomy-Evaluation

In what ways could Bigger Thomas avoid Mrs. Dalton and not have killed Mary?

In my opinoin I think Bigger could've aviod Mrs. Dalton and not have killed Mary, by doing two simply thing. the first think Bigger could have done to avoid Mrs Dalton when she walk in Mary room was to hid under the bed, and stay their quiet, until Mrs Dalton leave the room. After that he colud have and find his way to his room before anybody notice.

Reflection on N.H.D

I think this year NHD went well, it was not as stressful as it was last year. This year i picked my topic before we started diong the NHD project. mostly i had already had my sourses together, and i was able to do my research with no problem. my topic was easy, and the catogary that i pick to do my project on was also easy.
I really like diong NHD it helped me a lot on my research skill. i think NHD really gives you the opportunity to practice historical resaerch and be able to interpret it, and gives you a better understanding of your history. I think most people should take advange of NHD, because it can helped you develope a great skill in college and life itself.

Chapter three

Planning The Big Heist
In chapter three, Bigger and his freinds Gus, Jack, and GH meet at old Doc's pool room discussing their big heis. At first it started with Bigger and Gus and GH hanging out at old Doc's smoking, playing game, and having a conversation about Bigger getting a new job. all of the sudden the word Old Blum came out of Bigger mouth. The gang started asked Bigger why all of the sudden his bringing Old Blums name, bigger then said because they were going to rob him. They as soon as bigger breing up robbering a white person the gang started to get nervouse. Gus with angry said is not going to do the robbery, and the rest of the agreed with him. that robbing a white would mean entering into new territory and dealing with cops. But this idea of robbering old Blums didn't borther Bigger that much, even though he was the scariest of them all. Bigger and Gus got into an aguement with almost lead to a fihgt. while the gang were debating about robbering Old Blums, Old Doc was listening to their conversation. Doc's with the fear of the gang robbing him told them to leave.

Analysis
Richard wright wrote this chapter to compare and contrast of Black boy robbery thier community and the white community. And also to show the world that cops in the 1930's dont care so much about black on black crime, but they do care about black on white crime.

Chapter Two

Manhood
In chapter two Bigger and his were in the movie, watching a preview, when all of the sudden Bigger started looking suspeciouly in the room to see if their were any attendant nearby. After that he then unzip his pant and started to masterbath at his, and looking at Jack, until their both eyes meet. they both started to laugh. then Jack said to Bigger you at it again? Bigger said yep! am polishing my night stick, me too, jack said. they then started to masterbath together. After diong what they were diong for couple minute, they stop and move to new seats. And started giggling thinking about they next person that would come in and sit at the seats they were masterbathing in. finally they started to look at the screen after the preview was over and stated watching the movie in silent. Few minute later after the movie had already started a picture of a whte beautiful skinny girl pop out, and also a comment about the girl, that says the girl name was Mary Dalton the daughter of Chicago's Hengry Dalton, 4605, Drexel Baulervard. With a shock Bigger told Jack that, that was the daughter of the men he was going to work for.

Analysis
Richard Wright wrote this chapter to show that at some state in the 1930's, Black Boyz had nothing better to do but find an empty room somewhere and masterbath and thing about girls all the time. And also to show the world that Black American did not have the same oppotunity to get an education like most White American youth.

Quick Guide to (Native Son)

Chapter One

The Rat Massacare
chapter one started with a sound of a loud alarm clock going off in the little one room apartment, Bigger Thomas and his family lived in, and also with a loud enoying scream from his mom telling him to turn it off. Bigger mom then started to wake his little brother and sister up, telling them to get dress and leaved the house for the day, because she had a big wash to do. After that they all started to change reading to leave the apartment, so theier mom can do her big wash. But little that they know their was a big gigantic rat in the apartment watching them as they get drss. Not untill later on while Bigger little sister was finishing dressing, she spotted the rat. She then scream really loud, and said their he goes, at that moment the tiny apartment galvanized into voilet action. the Bigger mom and her sister were screaming, and jumping ontop of the bed. with no acception started to tipitoe his way slowly toward the hole were the rat was hidden with two heavy iron skillet, with horror has bigger aproched the rat, the big black dirty ratsqeal and leaped at Bigger trouser-leg and snagged it in his teeth, hanging on, Bigger then started kicking out his leg with all of the the strength of his body. the force of his body shook the rat loose and went sailing through the air and, struck a wall, again with a loud scream Bigger mom said hit im, Finally after chasing the rat for saveral minute in the little apartment , Bigger lifted the skillet and pounded the rats head cruching it. Bigger then took the dead rat and swing it at his sister. with creeps she fell headlong across her mother and ralled limply from the bed to the floor, with annoyed Bigger mom scream at him again, you sonofb**ch stop scarrying your sister, and take that sh*t out, you big fool.

Analysis
Richard Wright wrote this chapter to decribe the horryfing condition some African American family lived and the struggle the go through everyday. And i also think that he started this chapter with the sound of an alarm clock as a sin warning to the America as a whole about the dangerous state of race relation in the country in the 1930's.

(NHD Topic Essay) Cuban Misssile Crisis

The Cuban missile crisis took place during John F. Kennedy's presidency in the early 1960's. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a military confrontation among the United State of America, the Soviet Union and Cuban. During this time, the cold war threatened to become a nuclear war. i choose to focus on this topic for my NHD project because i wanted to learn more about the United State and it relationship with Cuba. During my research, my main focus will be on old military, and CIA records. I would also like to look at Kennedy's actions and responses during this time.

What drew me the most to this topic was the title of my project it self sound a lot conflict to me.
I guess the compromise of my topic will be how the United State, Cuba and other nation come to about an agreement with Cuba without violence. And also last but not lease i would like to look
at why Cubans can come to the United State, and why citizen of the Unted States can't travel to Cuban. And why is it that the US has a prison and a base in Cuba?
